Pease family
The history of my Pease family in New England starts with the Widow Margaret (King) Pease who was married to Robert Pease (the Locksmith) and her son Robert Pease who came from Great Baddow, Essex, in England.

Margaret King was born about 1570 at Chelmsford in England and was the daughter of Francis King. She married Robert Pease about 1586, in Great Baddow. He died April 16, 1623 in Chelmsford. Her son Robert was born October 28, 1589 in Chelmsford. She and her son Robert came in the Frances in 1634, where they landed in Boston or Ipswich and settled in Salem. It is said that Robert's brother John was also on the ship, as well as his eldest son Robert. Robert's wife Marie (French?) and other children are said to have come at a later date on another ship.

He settled in Salem where in January of 1637 he and his brother are given grants of land.

The Widow Margaret Pease's will was dated September 1, 1642 and proved January 1, 1645. In it she mentions a grandson John son of Robert.

Robert was admitted into the Salem Church on October 1, 1643 and two weeks later three of his children were baptized there. The inventory of his estate was filed August 27, 1644.

Margaret (KING) PEASE - born about 1573/4, Great Baddow, Essex; died 1644, Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts. Mrs. Margaret Weston, "mother [in law]" of John Pease
There are a number of unresolved kinships regarding the immigrant Pease family, and the usual care should be taken to verify the above generations. As an example of the difficulties, consider the following Court record quoted in two publications:

Charles Edward Banks, THE HISTORY OF MARTHA'S VINEYARD, (Edgartown, Massachusetts: Dukes County Historical Society, 1966), Vol. 2 Town Annals, p. 95:

A Court record dated November 3, 1635, contains the following statement: Ordered that John Pease shalbe whipt and bound to his good behaviour for strikeing his mother [in law] Mrs Weston and deryding or her and for dyvers other misdemeanors and other evill carriages. Massachusetts Colony Record, I, 155.

Robert Charles Anderson, THE GREAT MIGRATION BEGINS, (Boston, Massachusetts: New England Gen. Hist. Society, 1995), Vol. 3, p. 1966.

On 3 November 1635 it was ordered "that John Pease shall be whipped, and bound to his good behavior, for striking his mother, Mrs. Weston, and deriding of her, and for diverse other misdemeanors, and other evil carriages" [MBCR 1:155].

Mr. Banks added "[in law]" to the original record. He then concludes that Mrs. Weston was Margaret, husband of Francis Weston, and mother of Lucy, the first wife of John Pease (baptized 1608). Mr. Anderson concludes that Mrs. Weston was Margaret, the widowed mother of John Pease (baptized 1608), and that she wrote her will of September 1, 1644 using to her prior name, "Margrit Pease." "Margaret Weston" is named in a Court record on December 26, 1637, and the last mention of Francis Weston in court records is October 17, 1643. Francis Weston may have died prior to September 1, 1644, or Margaret may have used the Pease surname in her will since her principal beneficiaries was her grandsons Robert and John Pease. The wording of a November 4, 1646 deed seems to imply that Francis Weston pre-deceased Margaret Weston (ibid, p. 1965): "Richard Harcourt sells Thomas Angel his house lot or home share and housing, which formerly belonged unto his uncle Francis Weston and lately he bought the rest of it of his aunt Margaret Weston which she had her life in." Mr. Anderson, in THE GREAT MIGRATION: IMMIGRANTS TO NEW ENGLAND 1634-1635, Volume V (Boston, 2007), page 417, writes that "After reexamining the evidence, we remain satisfied with that conclusion [that Mrs. Weston was biological mother of John Pease. As a consequence we have no evidence for the parentage of John Pease's first wife, Lucy."

However, note that it appears that Margaret, mother of John Pease (baptized 1608) was in Great Baddow in August 1636, and is said to have been admitted to the church at Salem in 1639. If these records concern Margaret Pease, mother of John Pease (baptized 1608), she could not have been Mrs. Weston of the 1635 Court record, nor the Margaret Weston of the 1637 Court record. Mr. Banks may be correct in inserting "[in law]" in the 1635 Court record and concluding "It is therefore certain that our John Pease married Lucy, daughter of Mrs. Margaret Weston, wife of Francis Weston of Salem...." Refer to Mr. Banks' ANNALS of EDGARTOWN (pages 91-103) for detailed information concerning John Pease (baptized 1608) and his family, including comments on the relationship between John's first wife Lucy and her step-father Francis Weston.
