In 1633, James Barber (1588-1648), his wife, Unknown (Wife) Barber (1600-16??), and their three (3) sons, William born 1619, James born 1620, Joseph born 1626, and three (3) daughters, Mary born 1618, Elizabeth born 1624, and Patience born 1628, emigrated from England to the harbor area of Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1635 the family moved from Massachusetts Bay Colony to the area of the future Town of Newport on Acquidneck Island in the future Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

Family history states that two brothers Thomas and James from the county of Berkshire, England, descendants of Thomas Barber, an officer in Cromwell's Army came to this country, landing at or near Boston, Massachusetts. Thomas Barber went to Windsor, Connecticut, with others and this is the connection to the Connecticut Barber's.
