In 1635 the family moved from Massachusetts Bay Colony to the area of the future Town of Newport on Acquidneck Island in the future Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

Family history states that two brothers Thomas and James from the county of Berkshire, England, descendants of Thomas Barber, an officer in Cromwell's Army came to this country, landing at or near Boston, Massachusetts. Thomas Barber went to Windsor, Connecticut, with others and this is the connection to the Connecticut Barber's.
